In summer 2018, Rider University will be hosting the ninth annual Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Teacher Academy in July. Through funding from Bristol-Myers Squibb and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Academy students will become successful investigators, utilize hands-on field techniques and laboratory skills, and initiate Internet searches that rely upon numerous strategies to assist them in addressing complex scientific questions. Students in the 2018 Academy will conduct research in teams around ecology and sustainability to better understand human impact of the natural world. Our study of ecological succession will allow students to take samples of and analyze the impact of organisms on a decomposing carcass while collecting and insects and exploring forest ecology as well as fresh-water Macro-invertebrates.
A key goal of the Academy is to increase awareness of the value and rewards of a teaching career in STEM areas. Rising sophomores, juniors and seniors who have an interest in STEM, the capabilities and dispositions to be successful teachers, and an interest in working with diverse student populations are encouraged to apply.
